This collection contains the papers of Gertrude Frantz Stauffer, her husband Charles, and her son Charles, Jr. Early records for Gertrude are diaries, correspondence, and items from Fontgarth Hall girls' school. The bulk of this series consists of Mrs. Stauffer's correspondence with friends, family, and political acquaintances, including Senator Joseph Grundy.

Sarah Ann Stauffer, daughter of Charles and Gertrude Frantz Stauffer, was born at Lime Spring Farm in Rohrerstown, Pennsylvania and was the eighth generation of her family to live there. As a child, she attended the Shippen School in Lancaster, Ethel Walker School in Connecticut and Chateau Mont Choisi in Switzerland.
